I collected funds for a girl whose brothers are orphans and who faces hardships at home, making her eligible for Zakat. What happened was that the money was initially collected for the girl's Jahez (dowry/trousseau). As you know, the concept of giving and taking dowry (Jahez) has no basis (or is discouraged) in Islam. So the question is: Can that money be given as Zakat (Charity)?

Zakat was collected for a girl who is deserving (a Zakat recipient). However, it was discovered that she is using this money for her dowry (Jahez). You have now learned that Zakat is not meant for dowry and, therefore, Zakat cannot be given for this purpose. This is because the concept of dowry has no basis in the religion (Islam). Similarly, you cannot take Zakat for Hajj. Hajj is only obligatory (Fardh) when you have the financial ability (Istita'ah) to perform it. Tell them (the girl/family) to use the money for any essential household needs instead of the dowry, because using Zakat for dowry is not permissible (Jaiz) for either you or them.
