DWQA QuestionsSeeking Clarity: The Permissibility and Impact of Dream Interpretation
Dr. Asiya Staff asked 1 week ago
I have asked several times whether it is permissible to interpret dreams or not, and whether it is true that the very first interpretation given to a dream—whether correct or incorrect—is the one that comes true. I am asking this repeatedly because I frequently have dreams that I feel are signs from Allah, and many times, the interpretations of my dreams have actually come to pass. Is it permissible to engage in this? At times, these dreams are very distressing, while at other times, they are good. I have been doing this for almost three years now and find myself unable to stop searching for or asking for interpretations.

You asked about dream interpretation and whether it is permissible to seek it. You also asked if it is true that the first interpretation given to a dream is the one that comes true. Both of these points are correct, but I must advise you not to become obsessed with it. I have gone through a similar phase where I used to remember every single dream with great detail. Then, a phase came where I would dream but remember nothing. Now, if someone asks, I say I don't see dreams at all—though it’s impossible for a human not to dream; it’s just that we stop paying attention to them. If you feel a dream is a sign from Allah, share it only with a person who is sincere and compassionate toward you. That person should also be God-fearing and possess religious knowledge; such an individual will give you the right interpretation and offer sound advice. My husband performs this service as well. He says, "I perform Istikhara (seek guidance from Allah), and then I convey whatever understanding Allah puts into my mind."
