Are our failed efforts accepted (by God)? For example, I gave money for my mother's medicine, but the medicine turned out to be counterfeit and did not benefit her. That money was wasted."

"It is Allah’s principle that because this world is a world of causes (Asbab), He does not typically perform miracles here. This is why Allah’s way of bestowing blessings varies; you might put in effort in one place, but the benefit reaches you from somewhere else.
This is exactly why the true meaning of Tawakkul (trust in God) is to place your complete reliance on Allah and not try to control the results. Allah will grant ease, Insha’Allah. Benefit will only occur when it is Allah’s command. That is why healing (Shifa) is a creation of Allah, and without His will, even the most powerful thing in the world cannot provide any benefit.
