In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Leader of the Messengers, and upon his family and companions.
Time preserves its most precious moments, and today marks a silent yet deeply significant turning point in history.
Today is the 8th of Ramadan—a gateway that takes us back to Ramadan 60 AH (680 AD). This was the month when the foundation of a عظیم journey was laid—a journey that would awaken the entire Ummah.
This was the journey of Hussain ibn Ali.
The Story Begins Here
The tragedy of Karbala remains one of the most heartbreaking chapters in Islamic history.
Let us reflect on the key facts:
- Background: After the passing of Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan (R.A), Yazid ibn Muawiyah took power. Hussain ibn Ali refused allegiance due to injustice and oppression.
- Letters from Kufa: Over 50,000 letters invited him to lead them.
- The Date: 10th Muharram, 61 AH (680 AD)
- The Place: Karbala, Iraq
- The Martyrs: 72 companions, including members of the Ahl al-Bayt
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Hussain is from me and I am from Hussain. Allah loves whoever loves Hussain.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah)
“Hassan and Hussain are the leaders of the youth of Paradise.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi)
Ramadan 60 AH: The Decisive Turning Point
In Ramadan 60 AH, the political situation changed dramatically. Letters from Kufa reached Hussain ibn Ali, urging him to take a stand.
This Ramadan became a moment of deep reflection and decision.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The leader of martyrs is Hamza… and a man who stands before a tyrant, speaks truth, and is killed for it.”
Ramadan is not just about fasting—it is about transformation, courage, and purpose.
During this sacred month, Imam Hussain (R.A) made a decision that would shape history:
He would never bow to tyranny.
He said:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a dream… ‘O Hussain! Depart, for Allah wills to see you martyred.’”
(Tarikh al-Tabari)
This Ramadan became his spiritual preparation for the ultimate sacrifice.
Lessons from the Journey
- Truth vs Falsehood: Karbala drew a permanent line between right and wrong
- Standing Against ظلم: Never bow before oppression
- The Power of Sacrifice: Truth sometimes demands everything
- Love for Ahl al-Bayt: A timeless connection of the Ummah
Allama Iqbal beautifully expressed:
“Had the truth of Karbala not been revealed,
the distinction between truth and falsehood would remain incomplete.”
Conclusion
Ramadan 60 AH teaches us:
- Truth requires sacrifice
- Faith requires courage
- Ramadan is a month of action—not just عبادت
The legacy of Hussain ibn Ali reminds us that Islam is revived through courage, sincerity, and standing firm upon truth.
Final Dua
O Allah, grant us the love of Hussain (R.A),
and the strength to follow his path of truth and sacrifice.
Ameen.
