DWQA QuestionsThe Status of an Adopted Child at Puberty

You said in answer to one question that we should adopt a child from an orphanage rather than from relatives. So, when that child reaches puberty, how do they become mahram (a person with whom marriage is forbidden) to us?

Yes, to make the child mahram, if the child is still at the age of breastfeeding, the child should be nursed by a close female relative (such as the adoptive mother herself, or a sister/sister-in-law). As for the rest, you see, for such people (adopted children), the principle of [observing] boundaries comes in more strongly. You will have to be mindful at home; you cannot treat them exactly like your own biological child. After the child reaches the age of puberty, restrictions will certainly be imposed, right? Moreover, it is a great achievement that you have reached this point (in considering adoption). And generally, Mashallah, in the household environments of Pakistan, people are mindful of these things, so it can be done; there is no major issue.
